Structured PICO

Does captopril improve hemodynamics and exercise capacity in patients with severe congestive heart failure?

P
Population
11 patients with severe congestive heart failure (CHF)
I
Intervention
Captopril (oral angiotensin converting-enzyme inhibitor) administered acutely, followed by chronic therapy in 8 patients for 2 or more months
O
Outcome
Acute hemodynamic response (right atrial pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, mean arterial pressure, systemic vascular resistance, pulmonary vascular resistance, cardiac index) and chronic response (exercise time, cardiothoracic ratio)surrogate

Captopril provides significant acute hemodynamic improvement and long-term symptomatic and exercise capacity benefits in patients with severe congestive heart failure.
