How to become virulent. The staphylococcal accessory gene-regulator (agr) quorum-sensing system is responsible for integrating growth-dependent signals with a complex genetic network to coordinate expression of a large variety of virulence factors. Our current understanding of the molecular mechanisms of agr activation and inhibition are described, along with implications for the in vivo role of agr in pathogenesis.
