It is quite usual for ophthalmic lenses to have optical characteristics which give rise to horizontal prismatic effects which in certain cases may be the direct cause of visual discomfort. It is the purpose of the following discussion to point out that such prismatic effects in two cases which were seen by the author appeared to be the cause of visual discomfort at a near viewing distance.
