Why the study?
Does intraoperative flowmetry of the superior vena cava provide accurate information about tricuspid insufficiency?
Does intraoperative flowmetry of the superior vena cava provide accurate information about tricuspid insufficiency?
Intraoperative flowmetry of the superior vena cava may provide accurate physiological information regarding tricuspid insufficiency.
May support intraoperative SVC flowmetry for tricuspid assessment; leaves open validation before practice change.
The theories of venous return to the heart are reviewed. To evaluate venous return to normal human hearts, four parameters were recorded simultaneously: pressure in the right atrium and the right ventricle, ECG and flow pattern in the superior vena cava. A typical normal flow pattern in the vein was recorded. In human hearts with arrhythmias and tricuspid insufficiency, pathological patterns were obtained. Intraoperative recording of a flow pattern in the superior vena cava will probably give more accurate information about tricuspid insufficiency.
