Qualitative study reveals how physical, social, task, and system contexts influence distance learners, suggesting practical design frameworks for enhanced remote educational experiences.
We propose a model for utilizing contextual life settings to create enhanced user experience (UX) for distance learners. Educational institutions provide distance learning possibilities for varying learner groups. Distance learners participate in learning activities via learning management systems from varying contexts. When designing learning experience, the surroundings, and learners’ resources, including technical systems, should be considered to assure efficient learning. The interaction between user actions, user interface and the physical context including digital equipment constitute the UX of the distance learning system. In this study we apply the qualitative survey method ( N = 93) with contextual images ( N = 54). The target group of the study is distance learners. The data is analyzed using iconographical analysis to reveal learners’ real-life situational context. The analysis revealed the ambivalent nature of life contexts for distance learning experience design covering physical, social, task and system aspects. Based on the analysis, we present the LIFEX model which informs practitioners on how learners’ life contexts integrate to learning systems.
