Key result
This review evaluated the perioperative safety and long-term oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer, though no quantitative results were reported in the abstract.
Why the study?
Does laparoscopic resection improve perioperative safety and long-term oncologic outcomes compared to open approach in patients with rectal cancer?
Does laparoscopic resection improve perioperative safety and long-term oncologic outcomes compared to open approach in patients with rectal cancer?
This review aims to provide an update on the perioperative safety and oncologic feasibility of laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer compared to the open approach.
No quantitative results reported; leaves perioperative safety and oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic versus open rectal resection unresolved.
Backgrounds: With the advancement of science and technology in the field of minimal access surgery and refinement of techniques inlaparoscopic resection of rectal cancer, it has been widely accepted that the procedure is technically feasible. The safety and oncologicefficacy of laparoscopic colonic cancer resection have been demonstrated. However, the availability of review and data are scarce inevaluating the perioperative safety and long-term oncologic outcome between laparoscopic surgery in the setting of rectal cancer andopen approach.Aim: The aim of this review is to provide an update on most recent review regarding perioperative safety and oncologic feasibility oflaparoscopic resection for rectal cancer. Methods: A review of up-to-date literature and the more recent retrospective and prospective data on laparoscopic resection for rectalcancer were undertaken for utilizing Pubmed/Google/Springer Link, specifically focussing on the long-term and perioperative outcomes.
