The homogeneity region of the intermetallic compound V3Si was determined by electron probe microanalysis. This was necessary to eliminate the main difficulty to grow single phase V3Si which consists in its peritectic formation. To get polycrystalline bars a composition of 22 to 23 at% Si was chosen leading to a V3Si matrix containing inclusions of the eutectic V + V3Si. The removal of the eutectic by repeated floating zone passes is described. Single crystals free of second phase and of satisfactory quality were obtained.
