The structure of evaporated a-Si/SiOx superlattices has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering, and optical absorption spectroscopy. The layers are smooth and regular, but all three measurements show effects of bond distortions or defects within 1–2 nm of the Si/SiOx interfaces.
