The dynamics of the build-up and the dark decay of photorefractive gratings written in LiNbO3:Ce (1%) at room temperature and in undoped KNbO3 crystals heated above 70°C has been investigated. Positive and negative charge carriers seem to contribute to the photorefractive effect with different rise and decay times. In potassium niobate activation energies for both charge carriers are given. A fixing method is described, which leads to a large increase of the holographic storage times in KNbO3.
