Demonstrates the feasibility and indications for surgical intervention, including open cardiotomies, in infants with congenital heart disease.
Supports feasibility of infant congenital heart surgery; leaves open need for contemporary outcome data.
A material of 252 operated cases of congenital cardiac diseases in infants is submitted. In infants the operative treatment is based on the fact that about 40–50% of children will die spontaneously within 2 years— and most of them within the age of 5–6 months. It is pointed out that it is possible even in infants to establish an exact diagnosis, and it is possible to operate more than one third of these infants. The indications for operation of the most frequent types of anomalies: patent ductus arteriosus, ventricular septal defects and tetralogy of Fallot are described. Thirteen cases of open cardio-tomies in infants operated during extracorporeal circulation are reported.
