A broad high frequency depolarized peak has been observed in the light scattered from liquid helium I at an energy of approximately twice the maximum of the dispersion curve. Spectra are shown and a number of possible explanations of the phenomenon are discussed. The corresponding spectrum for 4 He gas at 0.96 atm and 4.22 K has also been observed and shows no structure.
