In this article, pattern nulling techniques for linear antenna arrays that make use of phase and position perturbations based on the genetic algorithm are investigated, respectively. Both nulling techniques are found to be capable of steering the array nulls to the prescribed interference directions and minimizing the perturbations simultaneously. In addition, both perturbation methods that make use of the genetic algorithm are simple and easy to implement compared to the conventional analytic method used in this problem. To verify the validity of both techniques, practical consideration with regard to sensitivity analysis of small variations of the designed perturbations for the perturbed pattern is examined, and illustrative examples are also demonstrated.
