Why the study?
Does unfractionated heparin or low molecular weight heparin affect thromboxane A2 biosynthesis in vivo compared to placebo in patients undergoing cholecystectomy?
Population
24 patients who were candidates for cholecystectomy because of uncomplicated lithiasis
Comparison
Unfractionated heparin, low molecular weight… vs Placebo
Design
RCT, randomly assigned
Follow-up

UFH may promote perioperative platelet activation unlike LMWH; extends evidence for differential effects and aspirin co-use in surgery.

Unfractionated heparin, but not low molecular weight heparin, causes in vivo platelet activation as evidenced by increased thromboxane biosynthesis, which can be suppressed by low-dose aspirin.
