Can serial measurements of central venous oxygen saturation detect changes in myocardial function in patients with myocardial infarction?
Serial measurements of central venous oxygen saturation may serve as a useful guide to monitor myocardial function in patients with myocardial infarction.
May not yet alter MI monitoring practice; hypothesis-generating case report requiring prospective validation.
A technique for detecting changes in myocardial function in patients with myocardial infarction by serial measurements of central venous oxygen saturation is described. The results obtained in 27 patients are reported. Three cases representing uncomplicated myocardial infarction, myocardial infarction with congestive heart failure, and myocardial infarction with congestive heart failure and shock are presented. The theoretical basis for using central venous oxygen saturation as a guide to myocardial function is discussed.
