The paper is devoted to the interpretation of the geographical approach to the study of Russian rural areas; identification of the key factors in their spatial organization at the national, regional, and municipal levels; and a multiscale review of the causes and consequences of change in the rural space in two regions, i.e., Kostroma oblast and Stavropol krai.
