The photolysis of C2H3Cl was investigated over the concentration range 0.8 to 200 × 1017 molec/cc at −78, 25 and 40°C. The photolysis was carried out in the presence of various free radical scavengers in order to obtain information regarding the primary process. The results indicated that the primary steps in the photolysis of C2H3Cl may be given by: The ratio RC2H3/RC2H3 = 1.4 · 0.1 is independent of wave length, pressure and/or temperature. The life time of the excited C2H3Cl molecule is estimated not to exceed 3.5 ± 10−11 sec.
