Why the study?
Does measuring the average or maximum VTI of 10 beats provide a stronger correlate to traditional cardiovascular risk factors compared to the VTI of the first beat?
Population
399 male subjects (mean age 45.5 ± 10 years) from the Firefighters and Their Endothelium (FATE) study.
Comparison
Measurement of hyperaemic velocity time integral… vs VTI of the first beat post-cuff release
Design
Cross-sectional

Single-beat VTI correlates equivalently with risk factors; leaves open whether it simplifies microvascular assessment in prospective outcome studies.
Does measuring the average or maximum VTI of 10 beats provide a stronger correlate to traditional cardiovascular risk factors compared to the VTI of the first beat?
The first beat of reactive hyperaemia is a suitable and sufficient measure of microvascular function for cardiovascular risk prediction, as averaging or maximizing over 10 beats does not improve correlation with risk factors.
