Summary Aluminium crystals, the surfaces of which have been prepared for examination solely by electropolishing, show extremely fine slip bands (displacements of 150 Å. or less) after small plastic deformations of about 0·5–2 per cent. The more familiar coarse bands involving displacements of the order of 5000 Å. appear subsequently. However, if the metal surface is mechanically polished prior to electrolytic polishing, the coarse bands occur in the earliest stages of deformation.
