Cleavage surfaces of an artificially grown crystal of sodium chloride am examined by multiple-beam interferometry. Two main features are noted, namely long narrow, more or less parallel strips, and superposed on this is a secondary fine grain structure. Silver films on sodium chloride are found to be unstable and apparently photosensitive. The cleavage mechanism is discussed.
