The transition 3 d 10 4 p 2 P o -3 d 9 4 s 2 2 D in Cu-like ions, the XUV laser transition proposed by Morley and Sugar, has now been identified in delayed spectra obtained with foil-excited ion beams of Nb, Mo and Ag. Calculations of the wavelengths agree closely with the observations, but the observed decay times are significantly larger than the theoretically expected lifetimes. We show that the lifetime is probably obscured by long-lived cascades from the lowest-lying quartet levels.
