Observations of the gallium spectrum emitted from a pulsed hollow cathode and a sliding spark in the region 400-6000 Å have been used for an extended and revised analysis of doubly ionized gallium, Ga III. The wavelength accuracy has been substantially improved as compared to previous observations. The ns, nd, nf and ng series of the 3 d 10 nl system have been extended, and the ionization energy has been determined to 247 820 ± 2 cm -1 . The previous level values for 3 d 9 4 s 2 have been discarded, and the correct positions have been established from several combinations. New levels of 3 d 9 4 s 4 p have been found, making 3 d 9 ( 2 D )4 s 4 p ( 1 P ) complete.
