Is self-directed learning (SDL) effective in meeting the educational needs of nurses? If so, is this method of learning compatible with nursing orientation programs? This article describes a study that examined nurses' experience with and knowledge of SDL, and explored its use in nursing orientation programs. Results showed that most nurses prefer to use SDL over learning directed by educators. However, this study identified a number of factors that educators should consider prior to implementing SDL in hospital orientation programs.
