To measure the mechanical forces acting on single point attached commissures (SPAC) in pericardial aortic valve bioprostheses under varying pressure loads.
Fabricated silicone aortic roots in internal diameters of 19, 25, and 29 mm (n=3 per size).
Implanted 3D-molded bovine pericardial SPAC valves by suturing the base to the annulus and anchoring each commissure to a miniaturized force transducer with a single 3-0 polypropylene U-stitch.
Pressurized the roots up to 200 mmHg to measure directional forces acting on the commissural attachment points.
All valves remained competent up to 200 mmHg, demonstrating a linear correlation between applied pressure and commissural force.
At 80 mmHg (diastolic pressure), recorded forces were 0.44 ± 0.22 N (19 mm), 1.15 ± 0.18 N (25 mm), and 2.00 ± 0.35 N (29 mm).
Forces acted predominantly along the axial direction rather than the radial direction across all tested valve sizes.
