The flexibility of some polyimide chains has been studied theoretically as a function of the chemical structure of the repeat unit. It has been shown that the thermodynamic flexibility can be varied over a wide range by the choice of the unit structure. For three polyimides, as an example, the flexibility of cyclochain structures approximates that for free rotation.
