The design of a soft X-ray spectrometer for the study of valence bands of metals and alloys is described. The instrument uses a blazed concave replica grating at grazing incidence with an electromagnetic photomultiplier as detector. Instrumental response and resolution are discussed with reference to ratemeter, electrometer and scaler recording techniques. K spectra of Be and L 2, 3 spectra of Mg and Al are presented and important features of these spectra discussed.
