Probiotic foods are produced by or contain live microorganisms and like other functional foods are believed to be good for health. Designing clinical experiments to prove the efficacy of probiotic foods present particular problems because of the need for a proper control in any feeding trial. The choice of a control limits the conclusions that can be made from the experimental data.
