The growth of superconducting YBa2Cu3O y thin films on a metallic substrate has been attempted by a YAG laser ablation technique. An amorphous MgO thin film was found to be a promising buffer layer when Ni-based alloys were used as the substrate. The highest zero resistance temperature, T c( ρ=0), was 86.0 K in its as-grown state and a transport critical current density, J c, was 8.6×103 A/cm2 at zero field and 77.4 K. The causes of the low J c were briefly discussed, particularly with respect to the misalignment of the crystal structure of the films.
