Theoretical analysis reveals geometric field-structural foundations for classical thermodynamic laws, suggesting fundamental thermodynamic quantities stem from continuous substrate dynamics.
Classical thermodynamics describes what happens with astonishing precision and almost zero explanation of why. It tells you energy is conserved but doesn't tell you what energy is in the medium. It tells you entropy always increases but treats that like a divine decree rather than a geometric fact. It gives you temperature as whatever a thermometer reads, pressure as whatever a gauge measures, and work as the capacity to do more work — which is circular in a way that should have bothered people more than it apparently did. This paper tears the curtain off. Using the Unified Structure Theory (UST) framework — which treats all physical phenomena as the behavioral consequences of shear distribution, gradient geometry, and oscillation dynamics in a continuous structured field — we rebuild thermodynamics from the substrate up. Every concept gets a field-structural identity. Temperature is oscillation intensity. Heat is shear transfer. Entropy is gradient smoothing. Work is directed geometric deformation. The laws are geometric accounting rules, not magic. The goal is not to replace the mathematics of thermodynamics — that math is fine, it works, keep it. The goal is to give the math a body. To make visible the physical substrate that classical thermodynamics deliberately obscured in the name of generality. When you know what the equations are actually describing, you stop asking "why does entropy increase?" and start understanding that asking that question is like asking why water runs downhill. It's not a law. It's geometry. If you've ever felt like thermodynamics was handed to you as a list of facts you were supposed to accept on faith, this paper is the antidote. This work is part of a larger collection of UST documents. The other versions available in the DOI record are not revisions of this document. They are separate papers written for different purposes. Some versions present the full mathematical proofs behind the update rules, others provide a technical physical description of substrate behavior, and others are formal proof papers built around the Universal Balance Laws. Together, these documents form a complete set: a plain‑language booklet, a physical description paper, and full mathematical proof papers, each offering a different perspective on the same underlying theory.
