Phosphorus (P) is normally considered an undesirable impurity in steels due to its negative effect on the mechanical properties. In the basic oxygen furnace (BOF), formation of stable slag helps the removal of P from steel to slag. Various researchers studied the dephosphorization potential of BOF slag and correlated it with phosphate capacity of slag, mostly at the end of the blow. However, at the industrial level, limited research was reported regarding the estimation of phosphate capacity of BOF slag at different phases of blowing such as after desiliconization period, during peak decarburization and at the end-of-blow period. In this paper, a study has been carried out in an industrial-level 150-metric-ton converter; the phosphate capacity and partition ratio (LP) was calculated for BOF slag at different blowing phases.
