Open boundary problems which arise in engineering analysis and design are required to be solved accurately and efficiently. In this paper, three different analytical techniques; (i) finite elements, (ii) infinitesimal scaling and (iii) hybrid finite element/boundary integral method are described and their relative merits are discussed. Results of application of the methods to electrostatic and electromagnetic problems are presented.
