Mucosal amiloride (2–5 × 10^-5 M) abolished active Na+ transport, while lowering mucosal pH below 5.0 reversibly reduced current generation with an apparent pK around 4.0.
Both ouabain and K+-free solutions decreased active Na+ and Cl- currents, and shunt pathways accounted for less than 30% of total transepithelial conductance.
