Structured PICO

How do magnetic resonance angiography and ultrasonography compare in detecting carotid artery stenosis?

P
Population
28 individuals (24 male, 4 female, mean age 64.5±7.2 years) with 56 carotid arteries evaluated for carotid artery disease.
I
Intervention
Three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and B-mode/color-coded Doppler ultrasonography (US)
C
Comparator
Conventional angiography (performed in a subset of 17 patients, 34 carotid arteries)
O
Outcome
Accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity for detecting and grading carotid stenosissurrogate

The combined use of MRA and US provides highly accurate detection and evaluation of carotid stenosis in patients with cerebrovascular symptoms.

Limitations

  • MRA is susceptible to artifacts caused by turbulent nonlaminar flow, flow separation, reversal of flow, and motion.
  • US has difficulty in detecting plaques in the high cervical carotid area.
