Linear fibre compression and a spectral window completely compensate for the chirping of gain-switched optical pulses from distributed feedback laser diodes. Transform-limited (TL) Gaussian pulses of less than 6ps pulse width are generated. Nonlinear pulse propagation experiments and simulations support the existence of TL Gaussian pulses.
