The grafting of polymers onto carbon black having few functional groups by the reaction of the surface aromatic ring with polymer radicals formed by the decomposition of peroxide polymers, polymers having peroxide group in the main chain, was investigated. Peroxide polymers were readily obtained by the cationic polymerization of styrene and the cationic ring-opening polymerization of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and ε-caprolactone (CL) using 3, 3'-bis (methylium) benzoyl peroxide diperchlorate as an initiator. Polystyrene, polyTHF, and polyCL were found to be grafted onto carbon black surface by the heating of the corresponding peroxide polymers with carbon black : the percentage of grafting of polystyrene, polyTHF, and polyCL reached 66. 2%, 60. 3%, and 42. 3%, respectively. These results clearly show that polymer radicals formed by the decomposition of the peroxide polymer were effectively trapped by carbon black surface. Furthermore, the effects of reaction temperature and solvent on the grafting reaction were examined. Polymergrafted carbon black gave a stable colloidal dispersion in good solvents for grafted polymer.
