The quartz-coesite transition has been determined over the temperature range 500°C to 1100°C. The pressure of the transition ranges from 23 kb at the lowest temperature to 32 kb at the highest temperature. Our apparatus was essentially a hydrostatic pistoncylinder device. Mineralizing agents were added to increase the rate of the transition at the lowest temperatures. The equation for the transition curve is P = 21.0 + 0.10T, where P is in kilobars and T is in degrees centigrade. The heat of the transition is estimated to be −155 cal/mole at 25°C.
