The slip geometry in the body-centred cubic compound β′AuZn (CsCl type structure) was determined from two-surface optical microscopy studies of slip traces on single crystals. The slip surface is generally a non-crystallographic or high index {hk >0} plane in the zone of the slip direction ⟨001⟩ and is temperature, strain rate and orientation sensitive. For orientations near 001, slip occurs on a system of the form {211} ⟨111⟩. Non-crystallographic {hk0} ⟨001⟩ slip is explained in terms of thermally activated cross-slip of screw dislocations from sessile to glissile configurations.
