Starting from the theory of Onsager‐Böttcher a new formula is derived by which the influence of the refractive index on the molar extinction coefficient of a solution can be calculated. As this formula is rather complicated, approximation formulae are given for certain types of solutions. These formulae prove to be in better agreement with experiments than the formula of Chako‐Kortüm.
