Small variations in working conditions significantly affect the performance of peristaltic roller pumps, highlighting the need for careful occlusion level setting during extracorporeal circulation.
The performance of a peristaltic Verticlude roller pump is experimentally evaluated for different working conditions. The resulting flow-pressure curves are reported for different: (a) evolving fluids; (b) fluid temperatures; and (c) pump settings. These settings include rotation speed and occlusion level, currently used in the heart-surgery practice at the Heart-Surgery Department of the Children's Hospital “Bambino Gesù” of Rome (Italy). The experimental test results illustrate (a) the relevant sensitivity of the pump performance to small working condition variations and (b) the consequent indetermination in patient perfusion fluid-dynamics. This has caused perfusionists to focus greater attention on occlusion level during pump setting.
