Methods introduced by Edwards (1965) and de Gennes (1969) for the study of polymer configurations with excluded volume are applied to the case of a uniformly charged polyelectrolyte immersed in a 1:1 strong electrolyte of density n 0 . The electrolyte is treated using the Debye-Huckel approximation and the following expression is obtained for the asymptotic mean square radius: R 2 =((5/3)( alpha / kappa 2/3 )(2 beta q 2 /3 alpha )) 6 5/N 5 where N is the number of links in the polyelectrolyte.
