Chromatographic separation and analysis of ions have been extensively studied in various branches of analytical chemistry since the invention of so-called "ion-chromatography".We focus our attention on the fundamental parts of chromatographic separation of simple ions in this review, consisting of ion-exchange chromatography, ion-pair chromatography, use of secondary effects, and ionic separation by controlling the potential of conductive stationary phases. Both stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric mechanisms for ion-exchange and ion-pair chromatography are discussed in detail. The mechanism and analytical uses of system peaks, related to indirect detection often used in ionic analysis, are also mentioned.
