Small biopsy specimens of the colonic mucosa from just above the recto-sigmoid junction have been obtained in 111 instances from 42 patients with ulcera- tive colitis. A group of 24 patients not suffering from ulcerative colitis and with apparently normal mucosa at sigmoidoscopy have been similarly studied as a control group.
