This incidence is far higher than that of the population at large, since about 0.5 to 1% of hospital admissions are for renal lithiasis, of which uric acid stones in adults account for 5 to 10%. The reasons for this marked predilection for urate urolithiasis in gout are not altogether clear, but certain correlations can be made.
