Key result
Adequate anchor selection for rotator cuff repair, tailored to tear anatomy, bone quality, and patient factors, is proposed to increase healing rates and improve clinical outcomes.
Why the study?
When performing rotator cuff repair, multiple variables such as anchor selection influence functional and clinical results, requiring review of anchor types, suture options, and patient-specific factors.
This review discusses technical considerations for anchor selection in rotator cuff repair to optimize healing and clinical outcomes.
May support individualized anchor selection in rotator cuff repair; leaves open need for prospective validation.
Rotator cuff repair is one of the most frequent shoulder surgeries performed by orthopedic surgeons. When performing a rotator cuff tear repair, there are many variables to consider when looking for a good functional and clinical result. One of these variables is the anchor selection. Adequate anchor selection will give the surgeon the means to perform the best repair possible. It is also important for the rotator cuff repair anchor selection to identify what type of suture is the anchor loaded with, and how many suture strands are in it. This type of anchor’s characteristics will give the orthopedic surgeon the proper tools to perform an adequate repair, keeping in mind the multiple repair configurations available such as single row or double row. These multiple suture anchors configurations allow the repair to be a strong structure. Getting the cuff tendon close to the footprint and allowing for adequate fixation increases the tendon-foot print healing potential. The purpose for this article is to discuss the different types of anchors available for rotator cuff tendon repair, the suture and suture configuration options, and the impact of tear anatomy, bone quality, and patient age and activity level. Choosing the right anchor for a rotator cuff repair will increase the healing rate and improve the clinical outcomes.
