We present a discussion of the inherent limitations imposed by experimental and theoretical considerations on a precise determination of the threshold displacement energy. The recently varying deductions of the threshold energy in copper, 9 eV to 30 eV, are discussed in detail. Upon consideration of the available experimental data and using theoretical estimates only as a guide, we conclude that currently the best value of the threshold energy in copper is 16 to 19 eV.
