Key result
Elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy had significantly higher POSSUM physiological scores than younger patients (20.3 vs 16.1, p=0.0001), though actual postoperative complication rates did not differ significantly (29% vs 25%).
Why the study?
Are POSSUM and E-PASS scoring systems useful for preoperative risk assessment in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy?

Are POSSUM and E-PASS scoring systems useful for preoperative risk assessment in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy?
Absolute Event Rate: 20.3% vs 16.1%
p-value: p=0.0001
The POSSUM scoring system is a useful tool for preoperative risk assessment of postoperative complications in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy.
Should not yet change preoperative risk assessment; leaves open POSSUM validity in elderly laparoscopic gastrectomy.

Matsutani et al. (2016) conducted a cohort in Gastric cancer (n=57). Elderly age (≥75 years) vs. Younger age (<75 years) was evaluated on POSSUM Physiological Score (PS) (p=0.0001). Elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy had significantly higher POSSUM physiological scores than younger patients (20.3 vs 16.1, p=0.0001), though actual postoperative complication rates did not differ significantly (29% vs 25%).
