Key result
Low HDS-R and high E-PASS scores predict an ~83% incidence of postoperative delirium.
Why the study?
The utility of HDS-R and E-PASS for predicting postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing gastroenterological surgery was unclear.
Do HDS-R and E-PASS predict postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing gastroenterological surgery?

No
Do HDS-R and E-PASS predict postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing gastroenterological surgery?
Odds Ratio: 0.77 (95% CI 0.648–0.915)
p-value: p=0.0031
HDS-R and E-PASS scores are useful independent predictors of postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing gastroenterological surgery.
Supports preoperative cognitive screening for delirium risk stratification; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation.

Numata et al. (2013) conducted an observational in Postoperative delirium (n=72). Lower HDS-R score and higher E-PASS comprehensive risk score (CRS) vs. Higher HDS-R score and lower CRS was evaluated on Occurrence of postoperative delirium (OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.648-0.915, p=0.0031). Lower HDS-R scores (OR 0.77) and higher E-PASS comprehensive risk scores (OR 30.3) independently predicted postoperative delirium, with an 83.3% incidence in patients having HDS-R ≤23 and CRS ≥0.35.
