A study of the reliability of the Esterase D (EsD), phosphoglucomutase (PGM), and Glyoxylase I (GLO I) enzyme systems in human hair root sheaths using the multiple systems method is described. Hair root sheaths from one hundred and fourteen individuals, including forty-four autopsy samples, were studied. The enzyme patterns of root sheaths were found to be as reliable as those of dried blood stains. Among three of the PGM 1 donors a slow or retarded “c” band was observed in the sheath PGM patterns. These were investigated in detail and the features which are thought to aid in the recognition of such PGM 1 patterns are summarized.
