Implication

May shorten procedural times in femoral nailing without tables; hypothesis-generating and requires randomized confirmation before practice change.

Structured PICO

Does performing reamed intramedullary nailing without a fracture table reduce operative time in patients with femoral shaft fractures?

P
Population
Consecutively treated patients with fractures of the femoral shaft treated with intramedullary nails from June 1986 to March 1996 at a Level 1 trauma center in Nashville, Tennessee.
I
Intervention
Reamed intramedullary nailing of the femoral shaft performed without the use of a fracture table (leg draped free on a radiolucent table)
C
Comparator
Reamed intramedullary nailing of the femoral shaft performed with the use of a fracture table
O
Outcome
Length of anesthesia time, prep and drape time, and intramedullary nailing time

Performing reamed intramedullary nailing of the femoral shaft without a fracture table significantly decreases prep, operative, and anesthesia times compared to using a fracture table.
