Eight chlorophyll-containing zones (the reaction centre complexes CPI, CPla, and CPa; four light-harvesting complexes, and free SDS pigments) were obtained by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis from SDS-solu- bilised spinach thylakoids and analysed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography in respect to their pigment composition. The results indicate that each chlorophyll—protein complex has its specific pigment composition. The comparison of the distribution of chlorophylls and carotenoids in reaction centre complexes reveals a considerable amount of chlorophyll b and a low chlorophyll a/β-carotene ratio in both RC complexes. Two groups of light-harvesting complexes can be distinguished by their chlorophyll a/b, xanthophyll/chlorophyll b//β-carotene, and chlorophyll b/neoxanthin ratios.
