An analysis is given for the quantum efficiency, capacitance, junction resistance, and detectivity of lateral-collection photodiodes. These devices are shown to be capable of yielding substantial reductions in junction capacitance and, in some cases, significant increases in detectivity from the values obtained with conventional photodiodes.
